The work of nearly every photographer is fundamentally defined by two moments. The first is the moment the photograph is taken, which may be a matter of chance, but can also be a thoroughly prepared creative act. The second—which is often overlooked—is the selection of “the right” shot from hundreds of frames of film, which is no less essential and, in many respects, a painstaking task. However, unlike other media, photography is also characterized by the necessity to edit works into cohesive units and grapple with context. This work is perhaps most clearly evident in what is today referred to as “classical documentary.” The exhibition is curated by Lukáš Bártl.
Jaroslav Pulicar (*1954) is currently one of the most prominent figures in Czech documentary photography, and he takes stock of his more than thirty-year career in the exhibition Efemeria and, above all, in the book of the same name, which he is publishing in collaboration with Galerie Valchařská.
