Ten years ago, Galerie Valchařská opened with an exhibition by Dita Pepe and the launch of her book *Self-portraits*. With this exhibition and book, Dita brought to fruition many years of work on what is arguably her best-known body of work. Since then, her work has evolved significantly; for example, she now combines photography with sociology and psychology, and is interested in the therapeutic dimension of her art. The titles of the books she has contributed to in recent years speak for themselves: Slečny, Měj ráda sama sebe, Intimita, and Hranice lásky.
The exhibition Not Just Photography, currently being prepared for Galerie Valchařská, will present yet another, previously unpublished aspect of her work: family photographs. The “heroines” of these photographs are primarily her two now-adult daughters, Ida and Ela, but also her husband, mother, and friends. Many of the images were captured spontaneously, but many were staged to a considerable degree, as Dita has incorporated her closest family members into her photographs from the very beginning. It is precisely this often imperceptible boundary between the staged and the natural that creates a special tension in these works…
The exhibition is curated by Lukáš Bártl. The exhibition runs through January 29, 2025.
