Where else to exhibit students’ first attempts at creating a beautiful book than at the Valchařská Gallery, located within the Helbich printing house? In a place where books are born and which invites reflection on colors, print quality, paper tone and texture, and various other special features. That is why this selection of works by graphic design students focuses specifically on the book. These unique prints, often existing in only two or three copies, include not only the author’s typography but also illustrations, binding, and sometimes even their own concept and text. Students typically work on a book for one to one and a half months. They illustrate the book, format the typography, and bind two copies. Essentially, these are bibliophile pieces.

The exhibition is inspired by a collaboration with the Helbich Printing House. This seemingly inconspicuous support provides students with both practical experience and material resources and is very important to the school.

The exhibition is being held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the school’s founding (1924) as part of a series of exhibitions and other cultural events that will showcase current activities in both school buildings to the public.

The exhibition is curated by Adéla Kučera Malendová. The works were created under the guidance of instructors Alena Jedličková and Michal Žižka.

The Secondary School of Art and Design in Brno was established through the merger of two formerly independent traditional schools, Brno’s “Textilka” and “Šuřka.” The year 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Šuřka (originally the School of Arts and Crafts, founded in 1924) and also the 12th anniversary of its merger with Textilka (originally the Higher School of Weaving, founded in 1860). To mark this occasion, a series of exhibitions and other cultural events is taking place to showcase current activities in both school buildings to the public.
