SUNDAY
Every Sunday, the dance hall transforms into a daring world of fulfilled wishes. The photo series titled “Sunday” focuses on the theme of aging in the city, specifically in Prague. The viewer finds themselves in the colorful world of retirees who don’t hesitate to brighten their lives with regular Sunday dance afternoons. They put on their best clothes and, despite an explicit ban, bring their own food and alcohol into the hall. This return to youth awakens an inner rebellion against society’s expectations of how a typical retiree should behave. At the same time, one cannot help but notice that these cheerful Sunday dance parties evoke a sense of loneliness and nostalgia for times past and people who are no longer here.
Soňa Maletzová (1992), a graduate of the Department of Documentary Film at FAMU, won first place in the Slovak Press Photo competition in the Under 25 category for her project Nedeľa.
The exhibition will be opened by Soňa Maletz, curator Lukáš Bártl, and Robert Helbich, with musical accompaniment by Vlado Nosál (Queer Jane). Opening on June 20, 2018, at 6 p.m.; the exhibition will run from June 21 to September 20, 2018.
